Who do I think I am?

As I sit in church listening to the sermon, I get an elbow to the ribs. I look at my hubby and he directs my attention to the screen at the front of the sanctuary. “Will EH’s mom please come to Children’s Church”. I slide out of the pew and walk the aisle to go investigate.

As I made my way down the hall toward children’s church I pondered…”who AM I?” I have been involved in this church for three years and should have a name.  But, In a church of this size it’s hard to retain all of the names and place them with the right faces; especially as new members come. I was just plugging involvement in the upcoming church directory to our Sunday School class for that reason. There are faces I see day in and day out, but just can’t seem to place them with a name.

For me,  it has always been this way. When my hubby was coaching and playing sports I was known as “Coach’s wife”…or “Mrs. Tex”. Now that we have kids I am known as my husband’s wife and “EH’s mom…or AH’s mom”. It would be easy to get down on myself about this. Am I not significant? (pride) Why is it that I don’t have a name? (sigh)

When I got home, I decided that this week I would ponder that very thing…but, looking  to God for the answer. This is just a snapshot of what I have come up with.

I am HIS.

He anointed us, set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in out hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come. 2 Corinthians 1:11

I am a new creation.

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation, the old has gone, the new has come! 2 Corinthians 5:17

I am His daughter.

I will be a father to you, and you will be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty. 2 Corinthians 6:18

I am an heiress…

He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life. Titus 3:5-7

Now, if we are children, then we are heirs- heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory. Romans 8:17

So you are no longer a slave, but a son; and since you are a son, God has made you also an heir. Galatians 4:7

…and I am free.

It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves e burdened again by a yolk of slavery. Galatians 5:!

I am chosen.

For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight In love he predestined us to be adopted as his sons through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will- to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves. Ephesians 1:4-6

For we know, brothers loved by God, that he has chosen you, because our gospel came to you not simply with words, but also with power, with the Holy Spirit and with deep conviction. 1 Thessalonians 1:4-5

I am His workmanship.

For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. Ephesians 2:9

I am redeemed.

In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace that he lavished on us with all wisdom and understanding. Ephesians 1:7-8

I am a wife and mother and am honored to be both.

Sons are a heritage from the Lord, children a reward from him. Psalm 127:3

Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her…(although a work in progress, a Proverbs 31 woman is what I strive to become)

Yes, I am a wife, mother, daughter, sister, teacher, helper, servant, volunteer, caregiver, and friend…chosen by God to be His. That is who I am and that’s just the tip of the proverbial iceberg.

The fact of the matter is, who cares what my name is…that is not how I am defined in Christ. It’s not about me anyways…

Whoever tries to keep their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life will preserve it. Luke 17:33

Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it. Mark 8:34-35

Hello, my name is child of the one true King
I’ve been saved, I’ve been changed, and I have been set free
“Amazing Grace” is the song I sing
Hello, my name is Child of the One True King

  1. I can only think of one to add: “I am forgiven.”

This only came to my mind because that is what I told Frank I wanted on my tombstone.
