Saturday morning, I was sitting at the kitchen table reading. Next to the table, on the wall, is what we call our “learning center”. Two magnetic boards display school work, art, a record of the number of books my son has read during the week, Bible verse of the month for children’s church, and a handwritten version of the Ten Commandments- among other things. I noticed that my son has posted little notes. In his handwriting, scraps of paper which read “Ending your day with God”, “Jesus Gives Life”, “Setting an example”…each one makes reference to a verse on the opposite side. The house was quiet. As I got up to tend to the sausage in the skillet and I could hear my son in the next room- the faint noises; accompanying “music” that plays with the imagination of a child. I peeked in to see him with a Captain America figure and vehicle. Sound effects and quiet speaking. As I walked down the hall to close my daughter’s door, I noticed that my son had also made his bed. It was not perfect, but done. This is something we expect before we leave the house every day, and he takes great pride in it.
This child makes my heart soar! His simple approach to play, notes to himself with tidbits from his bedtime devotion, singing along to Francesca Battistelli in the car loudly until he notices me looking at him in the rear view mirror…”MOM!”…all of these things done because HE enjoys them. They are not for show, not for anyone else (although it has an obvious effect on me), but just because. I wonder if this is the way God sees me. Am I doing things in my day to glorify Him? Acts of obedience, praise and worship just to glorify Him…not because anyone is watching; not because it’s on my “to do” list? Simple actions- the little things that show my love for Him- just because. What a wonderful morning.
Later…”Mom, I love your hugs. Wanna know why? Because they come from a very special person.” He’s one of a kind and a special gift from God. I could learn a lot from this kid.
Praise God from whom ALL BLESSINGS flow!
